Aydin iš Turkijos

/Scroll down for English version/

Labas.

Aydin, Turkija.

Hello. First of all, maybe you can tell a little bit about yourself?

My name is Aydin Ahmet Firat. I am 26 years old and I am from Turkey. I have one brother who is 3 years younger than me. I studied for a bachelor’s degree in international relations and at the same time – a joint law degree. Now I am studying for a Master’s degree – in International Relations. I can very briefly describe my personality: a person who enjoys reading, researching, writing, traveling, drawing, learning and telling people what I have learned.

How did you get here for the first time? Why Lithuania? And why our organization?

In my final year of undergraduate study, I realized that I needed to try something new, test myself and do something good for people. At the time, I was working with kids who are struggling with cancer, but that wasn’t enough for me. Especially, being here where I live has become very boring. I thought I wanted to help someone in another country and give a test to my personality growth. Lithuania was not the country about I first thought of when I started looking for projects. So, I first saw the ,,Open Community’’ project in Matulaitis, but not that it was in Lithuania. I didn’t know anything about Lithuania, I searched for information on the Internet. And I found Vilnius, it looked like a piece of heaven, a city and a country that had made huge progress after the Soviet occupation. I immediately completed the project. I would be lying if I said that there was no confusion in my mind when I thought I would volunteer with special people who have intellectual disabilities, because I have never had such an experience. Then I remembered my childhood friend who had an intellectual disability but was an amazing person with a special love in his heart. I thought that it will be a great opportunity to try myself and I was accepted.

How would you describe the time here? It was hard to leave?

Describing the time here, I want to say that it was the best time of my life. At first it was hard, as always, but I wouldn’t grow up as a person without difficulty, and then I enjoyed every minute with these people. It wasn’t even a job, I just helped them sometimes, and I just was there until I became part of this community. It was a lot of fun, especially the camps and retreats. I also have to mention that my colleagues were wonderful people, everything was easy and good with them. And personal life in Vilnius was great. I found a lot of friends with whom we had a great time and shared with everything. And most importantly, I survived the cold winter :D. Time passed very quickly, I wanted to extend it but failed. It was very difficult to leave, but already on the plane when I flew back to Turkey, I decided to get back here as soon as possible.

A year later, in this fall you came back, what was the second time here?

While I was still in Turkey, I did everything I could to get back here, so I started studying for a master’s degree, so I can come back  here for at least half a year with the Erasmus program. This time here was really different, because of quarantine. So first of all, when I came here I had to spend 14 days in self-isolation. After self-isolation, I had 20 days when everything was still open, social life was going on and I could go volunteer. So I tried to enjoy every minute. Then stricter quarantine locked me in a student dormitory with just studies, it was very interesting and valuable, but not because of them I came back here. Most importantly, although the time was different, but I am still glad to be back.

In the end, will there be a third time, when you come back here?

Third, fourth, fifth … I want to build my life here. I love Lithuania very much and especially the people who live here. Everything will be fine.  I’ll be back again next fall.
